The King's Speech is exactly the familiar, fundamentally unadventurous triumph-of-the-underdog period piece you see advertised here, with terrific performances from Colin Firth and (especially) Geoffrey Rush, and a lovely, somewhat off-kilter visual style. You can definitely watch the trailer and trust your instincts on this one.
The King's Speech, which is about King George VI's quest to overcome his speech impediment and rise to the challenge of his post, was enthusiastically received at Telluride and Toronto, including standing ovations at the former festival and the coveted audience award at the latter. The Oscar buzz for the movie is off the charts, with Colin Firth now considered a mortal lock for a Best Actor nomination, and the movie itself a definite Best Picture front runner.
