The 2010 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Liu Xiaobo "for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China".
Liu was the first Chinese citizen to win a Nobel Prize. In making the award, the Norwegian Nobel Committee cited Liu’s “long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China.”
Liu’s role as an activist came to overshadow his work as a writer and thinker, he published widely. Liu Xiaobo will not be able to collect his prize. Liu is serving an 11-year prison sentence in China for subverting state power.China has been pressing for a global boycott of Friday's ceremony in Oslo, Norway.
